Welcome to my web site dedicated to Royal Australian Navy categories and rate badges.  I have created this site as a way of tracing and preserving the history of the different categories and rate badges of the R.A.N.  I am also a collector of rate badges and have over 1300 in my collection.

I joined the R.A.N. in 1988 and served full time until 1994.  I then served as a reservist for several years.  I am currently a member of the staff of the Museum of HMAS Cerberus, where I specialise in research on uniforms & categories / rate badges.

The Photo's link contans five folders.  The first is a pictorial identification catalouge that shows all of the rate badges used by the RAN over time along with the categories name and in some cases are date specific.  More information on each badge can be found by clicking on the picture. The second outlines some rate badges that were proposed under different reviews but never adopted.

The third folder contains pictures of my current rate badge collection, this is updated regularly so check back from time to time to see how I am going.

 The forth folder is a time line containing information on the history of categories and rate badges in the RAN as well as examples of the different materials and badge types used and the different uniforms they were worn on. 

The fifth folder is for pictures of other peoples collections.  If you would like a picture of your collection displayed, please email it to me and I'll add it to the folder (please keep pictures to a minimum due to web site limitations).

All of my rate badges are stored in special folders with inserts using acid free paper and acid free plastic covers.  Each folder is then labeled to reflect which badges are in it, eg: Gunnery, Fleet Air Arm etc.
